AMT 16V Conversion. Performance.

Is one thing that the conversion has a plenty. In 2000 I went to a Top Speed DayTop Speed Challenge Day hosted by Revs magazine at Alconbury Airfield. I only did one run because I was so ill on the day that I couldn't face queing for another go. My speed across the line was 130mph. At the time I was only getting about 90% throttle (didn't have a 'proper' throttle linkage). The acceleration up to about 100mph was pretty mental then it just started to gently creep up once we got to 120. Its fair to say we ran out of runway before we ran out of top speed! The car was in full road trim with all my tools, spare wheel etc still in the boot, so I think 130 was a good speed. Later on that year we went to a 0-60 challenge again at Alconbury, the weather was poor though and a damp track meant decent times for FWD cars were few and far between, my best time was 8.2 seconds, but wheelspin was a big problem. Last year another Mini with the AMT conversion clocked 6.2 seconds on a scorching hot day. The best aid to getting a good time is to fit a LSD, then I think 5's are possible.

During Evolution One of this conversion I did about 7000 miles with only two breakdowns, one was a blown fuse!, the other was when the driveshaft came out of the diff when the alloy support bracket came loose. At the same time as this happened I overheated the engine (the fan didn't cut in) and killed the head gasket. Looking at the sotware max and min settings showed it got up to 120 degrees! Ooops!

Cumbria Classic

I also did trackdays at BinBrook Airfield (lots of wheelspin in monsoon conditions), Elvington Airfield, Castle Combe and Croft as well as trips to various shows up and down the country along with daily use (till I got the Scooby). The handling has never dissapointed (despite what you would imagine with a big old engine up front) and I think with careful setting up can be a match for any other track day Mini but with the bonus of maybe twice the power!
